Deer Carcass Disposal Guidelines

The Portage County Solid Waste Transfer Facility can only accept deer carcasses and remains during certain times of the year. For the 2019 Deer Season, Portage County Solid Waste has partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to provide a dumpster at the Portage County Solid Waste Transfer Facility beginning November 1st through December 31st. After December 31st deer carcasses and remains will no longer be accepted. This service is only available to Portage County residents. Processing facilities and other businesses will need to make arrangements to have deer carcasses and remains sent directly to the Marathon County Landfill.

Due to CWD concerns many Wisconsin landfills no longer accept deer carcasses. If you need to dispose of deer carcasses or remains outside of the time frame listed above, the Marathon County Landfill will accept them directly for disposal throughout the year for a fee. As a reminder, it is illegal to dispose of waste on any public lands or roadways, or on private property without permission. Additional guidance on deer carcass disposal is available at dnr.wi.gov/topic/wildlifehabitat/carcass.html.

Lastly, the Portage County Solid Waste Transfer Facility is not a CWD testing site. Please drop deer heads off for testing at the Plover Ranger Station self-service kiosk, People’s Meat Market, or by appointment only, at New Life Taxidermy or the Almond Rod and Gun Club.
